Fighting Zika Through Indoor Residual Spraying
Highlights
- Zika has severe health impacts for pregnant women and infants.
- Abt is using insecticide spraying to prevent transmission.
- We're enhancing USAID vector control and monitoring programs in several countries.
The Challenge
In the last few years, the mosquito-borne Zika virus has impacted pregnant women and their infants, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Approach
Drawing on experience dealing with mosquito-borne malaria in Africa, we have been working to prevent Zika outbreaks. The Abt Associates-led President’s Malaria Initiative Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (PMI AIRS) Project expanded its scope to support USAID Missions and Bureaus in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Results
The initiative, known as Zika AIRS Project or ZAP, enhances USAID’s ability to implement vector control and monitoring programs in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras.
