Work and Well-Being in Science: An International Study

Highlights

  • Abt is studying the well-being of scientists in the workplace.
  • Abt is surveying biologists and physicists in four countries.
  • Results are expected in late 2021.
The Challenge

Abt is conducting a survey of scientists as part of Work and Well-Being in Science: An International Study, sponsored by The Catholic University of America. The survey aims to understand the factors that affect well-being in the workplace for scientists. The study is a multi-country web survey of biologists and physicists at PhD-granting academic institutions and national laboratories and research institutes in four countries: India, Italy, the U.K., and the U.S.

The Approach

Abt compiled the sampling frame through web scraping and manual verification. We e-mailed a pre-notification letter, endorsement letter, and survey invitation to each sample member. Some sample members received a postcard encouraging participation. To qualify for the survey, the sample member must hold or be in the process of obtaining a PhD or equivalent degree. Data collection began with a pre-test. Respondents receive a (USD) $20-$25 e-gift card for completing the 20-minute survey, given in Italian and English.

The Results

Results are expected in late 2021.
